For many people, smart lighting is the first step towards a smart home. The most famous brand for smart lighting is Philips Hue. Who did not start with a starter package with three smart lights, the Hue Bridge and the Dim Switch? The high quality of Philips Hue comes with a downside and that is the price. If you want to provide the entire home with smart lighting from Philips Hue, you will have to dig deep into the pouch. Fortunately, there are also alternatives. In this article we will look at how you can integrate the smart lighting of IKEA Trådfri with Philips Hue and operate it together with Google Home.
Philips Hue and IKEA Trådfri use the same Zigbee protocol. In the beginning the lamps did not work together, but in the summer of 2017 IKEA with the new firmware made sure that you can also link the IKEA Trådfri lamps to Philips Hue because of the wider compatibility with other Zigbee products. . And linking that is actually very simple. This way you can expand your Philips Hue lighting with IKEA Trådfri lamps at a lower cost, without the Trådfri hub of the Swedish furniture giant. How you do that and what disadvantages you have to take into account, we tell you in this article
IKEA Trådfri link to Philips Hue
Do you have Philips Hue in your smart home and would you like to add IKEA Trådfri lamps? In the IKEA store you can find various packages of smart lamps at an affordable price. The choice is not as big as with Philips Hue, but a separate color lamp will cost you less than 25 euros. Possibly there are packages for sale with accessories such as the remote control and a motion sensor. With these packages, the lamps are directly connected to the accessory, so you can also use them without Trådfri hub or Hue bridge. However, you will miss a lot of possibilities.
The first step you have to do is reset the IKEA lamp. For this you turn the lamp into a fitting and turn it on. Then you have to turn the lamp off and on six times in quick succession. After six times, the lamp will flash briefly so that you know it has been reset. Open the Philips Hue app and click on the three vertical dots in the upper right corner. Then choose 'lamp configuration'. At the top, choose the option 'Add Lamp' and then 'Search'. The lamp will now be found within a few seconds. Wait for the search process to complete and the lamp has been added. Via 'Room configuration' you can now add the lamp to a room in the smart home. Up to ten seconds together: turning IKEA Trådfri lamp into fitting and turning it on, resetting it by turning it on and off quickly six times, and then searching in the Hue app with lamp configuration. That's all.
The IKEA lamps can be connected to Philips Hue within ten seconds and can be used completely with your real Philips Hue lamps. Via the Philips Hue app, there are also many more colors to set than via the IKEA app. So you get more out of your IKEA lamps with the Philips Hue app. IKEA Trådfri is cheaper to buy and so you can expand the system economically. The lamps can be used in combination with the Philips Dimmer Switch and via the Philips Hue app you can use the color panel to change the color of the lamps. You can also serve both brands perfectly with your voice via Google Home, but more about that later.
However, you will have to take into account some disadvantages. Since we do not use a Trådfri connection hub, you can not update the lights. So you will have to do it with the state of the lamp as you bought it. The colors are also slightly less than the real Philips Hue lamps.
Many users who have paired the IKEA lamps with Philips Hue also complain about the (sporadic) flashing of the IKEA lamp, or the much slower reaction when switching the lamp on and off in combination with the Philips Hue lamps. I have not experienced these disadvantages myself. In contrast, the IKEA lamp even goes a fraction earlier than the Philips Hue lamps.
The biggest disadvantage I have encountered myself is that the set colors sometimes seem to be reset. One day the light turns on in exactly the same color as the night before and sometimes the light is completely reset and turns on in (cold) white light. It happened to me once that the lamp, while it is turned on, suddenly resets itself. The set blue light suddenly turned white again one evening. This is easy to reset via the app, but it is an extra action that you would rather not do.
Add IKEA Trådfri accessories to Philips Hue
Another story is the accessories of IKEA Trådfri. You can not add it to Philips Hue via the normal way. An example is the remote control of IKEA, with which you can not only turn the lights on and off, but also dim and change the colors. The lamp has been reset and added to Philips Hue, making the accessory that the lamp was previously connected with (if you buy a set) no longer works. If you now also reset the remote control (press the button four times quickly, you will find this at the batteries behind the cover) you can pair the remote control again. To do this, hold the remote control near the IKEA lamp (few centimeters away) and hold the button down for 10 seconds. The light will blink and the red light on the remote control will go on. After about ten seconds, the accessory is connected to the lamp … and the lamp is disconnected in Philips Hue. That does not work.
Connecting accessories to third-party apps
It is not possible to add accessories by the official route, but it is possible to do so by a detour. There are, however, disadvantages attached to this. You can force a connection via 'Touchlink'. This can be done with third-party apps such as Hue Essentials for Android or Hue Lights for iOS. I used Hue Essentials myself, but the principle for Hue Lights will be the same.
You will have to connect these apps to your Hue Bridge after downloading. Follow the instructions when you open these apps for the first time and everything is self-explanatory. You can add not only lamps but also accessories through these apps. We take the remote control of IKEA as an example. Choose the option to add a lamp in Hue Essentials and scroll down to the 'Touchlink' option. Reset the remote control by clicking the link button four times. Make sure you keep the remote control close to the Philips Hue Bridge. Press the pairing button for ten seconds and while holding down the pairing button press the 'Touchlink' button in the Hue Essentials app. It went wrong a few times with me, but the third time the remote was connected (short flash of the red light on the remote). Now the IKEA remote control is also connected to Philips Hue. You can then pair the lights with the remote control without immediately losing the connection with the bridge again. To do this, hold the remote control at the relevant lamp nearby. Press the pairing button again. The light will start flashing and after about ten seconds the light will be connected to the remote control.
Now you can connect the connected lamps (on paper to ten different lamps, but I could not test them here). operate with the IKEA remote control while they are paired with Philips Hue. You can switch the lamps on and off and dim them. Unfortunately, the option to change colors with the remote control did not work. This turned out to be only possible in the Philips Hue app. In addition, the remote control is linked, but this is nowhere to be found in the app. The system works because you can switch on and dim lights, but you can not find the accessory in the app anywhere. The operation is ultimately not ideal, due to the lack of the option to change colors and the cumbersome way of connecting. Can you live with this and you prefer to use the IKEA-remote control than the Dim Switch from Philips itself, then you can handle this (albeit with defects) reasonably well. However, I can not recommend it.
Operating IKEA Trådfri via Philips Hue with Google Home
You can also control the IKEA Trådfri lamps, which you have connected to Philips Hue, with your voice via Google Home. To do this, Google Home must first synchronize again with the new lamp. For this you can call “Ok Google, synchronize my lights”, but also disconnect Philips Hue and add it again in the Google Home app works fine.
Previously it was not possible to operate the IKEA lamps, which you have connected to Philips Hue, individually with Google Home. The IKEA lamps simply went along when you turned on the Philips Hue lights. Today, however, this is possible. So you can just use the name you gave the IKEA lamp to turn the lamp on and off individually. So Google Home does not seem to distinguish between official and unofficial lamps. Voice control with Google Home works as it should. So you can simply mix Philips and IKEA lamps together.
Extend Philips Hue with IKEA Trådfri?
Is it useful to extend your Philips Hue lighting with IKEA Trådfri lamps? Linking the lamps is a piece of cake. Also the voice control with Google Home works excellent. Can you live with the disadvantages as a resetting lamp or a lamp that sometimes flashes, then IKEA Trådfri is an economical option to expand the smart lighting in your home. Linking accessories is possible via a detour, but ultimately not recommended by the use of third-party apps, the lack of the option to change colors on the remote control and the invisible of the accessory in the app. 19659026]
